Classical Indian Hindustani Rhythm and Music

Jay Robinson (Kimberly BC)

My intention for my workshop is to expand awareness and appreciation of traditional music. Tabla is a 2000 year old instrument, with its predecessor going back another thousand years, and whose rhythmic tradition is said to go back 5000 years to Krishna. Hindustani music is a huge subject, as deep and far reaching as yoga, tantra, or ayurveda. I believe this subject can be introduced to anyone by way of understanding its rhythm cycles and that the appreciation for this music is greatly enhanced by this understanding.

BIO

I've has been playing hand percussion since 13 years old and became interested and swiftly passionate about classical Indian music since I was in high school. Over the last 5 years I've had the opportunity to study classical Hindustani tabla and have deepened my understanding of classical music such that it's opened itself to me in a way that I want to share with all of you!

Coming Back to Life - Intro to the Work that Reconnects

Tammy Brooks (Victoria BC)

Join us for a short experiential journey into the wisdom of The Work That Reconnects. Based on the work of pioneering eco-activist and educator Joanna Macy (http://www.joannamacy.net/), the Work that Reconnects is a series of practices and tools that support us to reconnect with ourselves as interconnected "earth pieces" and to engage in the desperately needed shift to a Life Sustaining Society. As the world teeters ever nearer to chaos and collapse, these practices are all the more important in helping us stay connected, engaged and hopeful in the face of such challenging times. Centred on gratitude, grief, connection and action, this work is a powerful way to support ourselves and others to be in service to the more beautiful world we know is possible.  After a short introduction to the work, we will try out a few of the key practices. This is an applied workshop, not a presentation, so please plan to arrive on time and stay for the duration of the session in order to ensure your own and others comfort and well-being. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring something to sit on and a journal or paper and pen. Additional resources and tools for continued practice will be shared.

Temple of the Heart ~ Cacao Ceremony with Lila and Friends

Lyndsay Lila & David Miller (Salt Spring Island BC)

We begin our ceremony to tune into our intentions, to commune with the Spirit of Cacao and connect in the heart. Cacao, is a sacred plant medicine that is celebrated as the food of the gods and has been used in Shamanic ceremonies in Central and South America since ancient times. Raw cacao is considered a superfood and is one of the highest sources of magnesium known. Cacao contains Anandamide, known as the bliss molecule, named after Ananda, the Sanskrit word for joy, bliss and happiness.

As we open up to the cacao through ceremony and intention, this infuses into our journey  to show up where we want to open up to more love and bliss in our lives. Weaving in breath, movement and sacred sound frequencies we bring in presence and awareness to integrate this heart wisdom. Returning home to the temple of our heart, we remember ourselves as Love.

BIO

Lyndsay Lila - A dance shaman, temple keeper, community builder and sound alchemist, Lila loves to provide spaces for inspiration, connection and remembrance. She weaves in ceremony into all her offerings as her devotion to the divine and desire to create safe and sacred spaces for self-healing and presence. Lila is based on Salt Spring Island on the West Coast of Canada though spends multiple months each year traveling sharing ceremony, dance journeys and connecting with other communities. Healing the Past; Making Space

Integenerational Trauma & Personal Responsibility

James W Jesso (Kitchener, Ontario)

We are not born into this world as a fresh slate into a new life. We are born into a psychological and emotional reality forged long before birth, gestation, and even conception. We are born the vertex of both our mother’s and our father’s lineage. We carry forth into our lives the legacy of our family, and like it or not, we are responsible for that. In this workshop, I will discuss intergenerational trauma, developmental conditioning, epigenetics, and the importance of healing our connection to our family, especially our parents. I will also offer some key practices for self-guided healing and resolution work. By learning to attend skillfully to this responsibility we free ourselves from past scripts and make space inside of ourselves to better define the legacy we will pass on from here. But what does this responsibility mean? What is this bequeathed legacy and what do we do with the trauma it may contain? How do we free ourselves from its confines while staying true to its lessons? And what can that freedom grant us?

BIO

James W. Jesso is a public speaker and author who pulls apart his psyche to weave stories out of the process. Deeply versed in the psychedelic experience, his work draws on the wisdom and insight distilled in facing the turbulent reality of his own darkness.  He has authored numerous articles, essays, and videos, done radio, podcast, and print interviews, and toured across the world giving lectures and facilitating public discussions on a variety of subjects. Jesso has given over 60 public presentations since the start of 2013. Kanata Soccer Program

Toto Andre (Calgary AB)

Using Creechi and sun dance teachings, Toto teaches village consciousness through soccer. To facilitate the experience of community through soccer - the ultimate game of sharing, where you are constantly giving and receiving; where people of different skills and abilities work together to put the ball in the net and why we call it: a goal! To use soccer as an empowerment tool, which is not about speed, strength, and competition, since the ball can move faster than you can run, but an expression of collaboration, playfulness, and spirit.

Toto hopes to use the workshop as part the Emosewa Cap Underground Soccer League Festival Season Season, employing playful versions of the game, using a variety of size balls from a plastic golf ball to beach balls and inclusive games of 4 on 4 on 4 on 4 with 2 balls! No cleats! As a message we need not tear up Mama Earth to get somewhere faster, makes it safer and more accessible for all ages. It's how we play together! It's how we dance with the ball! it's how we sing together off the ball! Collaboration, community, and fun are the name of this game!!

Meet Yourself Through Tarot

Kitty Hardy (Demmitt AB)

'Know Thyself' is the inscription on the arch as you enter the temple of the Oracle at Delphi. The divinatory arts have always been used as a method of self-reflection and self-awareness.  They offer a way to understand not only the world of which we are a part, but ourselves and our own interactions with the world and the beings who occupy it. This workshop will look at the tools that Tarot offers for exploring ourselves and our relationship to the world! A way for understanding the cards we've been dealt, so to speak, and to learn the ways in which we can live in harmony, trusting our intuition and cultivating awareness in the world.

BIO

Kitty Hardy grew up in the woodlands of Northern Alberta. She found connection in the isolation by wandering in the woods, learning about the trees, plants and animals in the area. She would take her journal, a book and a deck of fairy tarot cards with her wherever she went. She cultivated a deep understanding of the tarot during these many hours of quiet study and built an intuitive relationship with the world around her.

 Men's Circle

Nils von Hahn (Vancouver BC)

Always safe, supportive, honest, and heartfelt the Men’s Circle has become a cherished tradition and vital check in for the Brothers at the Inshala Gathering. It is open to Men of all ages who feel called to gather and hold space for each other in confidence and without judgement. It is facilitated by Nils but is truly a group experience.

Bio

Nils has been exploring the terrain where traditional music from around the World and Electronic Bass Beats intersect with a joy and passion for over 20 years. One of the pioneers of West Coast Intentional Dance Culture he almost single handedly activated the legendary Sunshine Coast scene of the early 2000's, and in 2004 took his DJ and Event Production talents to Vancouver where he and some cohorts established Beats Without Borders and quickly grew it into one of the Premiere places for the biggest Global Beat DJ's and Producers in the world to perform. Nils has an incredibly diverse collection of Music and has an innate ability to draw upon it to create compelling and unique Dance Floor experiences every time he gets behind the decks. He crafts each set as an experience to be had in the moment in time it is shared, and has therefore resisted the magnetic pull of modern technology and social media and has never uploaded one of his DJ sets online. If you want to have the Nils experience you have to seek him out when he is sharing his talents at an actual event and plant yourself in the middle of the Dance Floor.  It's well worth the effort.

Reuniting with our Plant Allies

Latifa Pelletier-Ahmed (Calgary AB)

Go to the pine if you want to learn about the pine, or to the bamboo if you want to learn about the bamboo - Basho circa 1650 AD. Based on the teaching of the German poet, playwright, and naturalist Johann von Goethe, we will learn basic tools to help us learn the language of plants. Opening our minds and hearts is key, as we begin the process of observation. We will draw, smell, taste and feel a single plant. Allowing our intuition to guide us, we will find that remarkably we are able to perceive traditional and scientific knowledge regarding plants using only our senses. Plants are conscious beings that carry within them a profound knowledge. Deep wisdom knows that the ultimate source of knowledge regarding how to work with plants comes from the plants themselves.

BIO

Latifa Pelletier-Ahmed is founder of Latifa's Herbs offering plant-based health consultations and educational services to the community. She is qualified with a Master of Science in Herbal Medicine from Middlesex University, London, UK and a Bachelor of Science in Botany from the University of Calgary. She has studied and worked with plants for over a decade and has been conducting plant walks and workshops since 2014 in London and Calgary. She currently teaches Plant Communication at the Light Cellar in Calgary. She believes all people have the right to access the plant medicines that grow around them. www.latifasherbs.com

Deya discovered music in the caves of Central Australia, around campfires in the desert & duned cliffs of the Great Australian Bight. She has traveled extensively recording live onsite at power places including the Sinai Desert, Teotihuacan's Pyramids of the Sun & Moon, Avebury crop circles, Uluru & Kata Tjuta in Central Australia. The Dynamics of Human Movement

Ray Hawkins (Calgary AB)

Learn by interaction or by observation the various dynamics of human movement. Beginning with Early Childhood Movement and its structural significance, Primitive Movement, The Body as a Tool, and Corrective Exercises (including the significance of proper muscle sequencing) you will have an opportunity to heal yourself. We will also explore the psychological influences that shape and reshape our body. Throughout our evolution in movement we have shaped this physical body to move with efficiency and the least amount of effort. However, cultural influences, belief systems, and a lack of rightful knowledge/awareness can make even the simplest movements painful and greatly susceptible to injury. But going back to the basics we can restructure and heal many of our physical problems with the act of walking. Concluding this workshop will be a 'step by step' explanation and practice of how to heal your body through the art of walking.

Through the use of a looping machine, we will encapsulate our own rhythms as a collective and create something uniquely beautiful. On this musical journey we will learn how holding space and taking space can work together to create a melodic exposition of life. The whole production will be recorded live and distinctly dependent on who participates and what we decide to make. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to be a part of the energy in whatever way that means to them.

Jordi has created various workshops to hold space for individuals to do just that!. Some of these workshops include her New Moon and Full Moon workshops which help individuals to tune into their natural cycle of bringing in their intentions and creating, as well as releasing and clearing space within themselves. These workshops help to empower individuals to take charge of their own healing and growth and step into their inner alignment to follow their desires within their hearts.

Jordi also loves to work with kids and teaching children these tools of self love, self care and expanding awareness!

BIO

Toto hopes to use the workshop as part the Emosewa Cap Underground Soccer League Festival Season Season, employing playful versions of the game, using a variety of size balls from a plastic golf ball to beach balls and inclusive games of 4 on 4 on 4 on 4 with 2 balls! No cleats! As a message we need not tear up Mama Earth to get somewhere faster, makes it safer and more accessible for all ages. It's how we play together! It's how we dance with the ball! it's how we sing together off the ball! Collaboration, community, and fun are the name of this game!!
